Artists and Books: Himali Singh Soin

The Ensemble then reflected on Himali Singh Soin’s performance from the previous evening, The Particle and the Wave. Countering an algorithmic aural visualisation of the 1,265 semi-colons in Virginia Woolf’s The Waves, the performance used the digressions of marginalia and the spontaneous structures of improvisation to examine the book as a machine of immortality and purveyor of radical politics. It was observed that the book as projection was disintegrating into Singh Soin’s body, with the marginalia remaining as residue of this interaction. Singh Soin added that the symbol of the semicolon has an anthropomorphic quality to it, and this was complemented by her choice of costume which exposed her spine to the audience.
